WC baseball sweeps Vernon in four games

The Weatherford College baseball team swept Vernon College in a four-game series this past week in doubleheaders in Weatherford and Vernon.

The Coyotes improved to 22-6 overall and 4-0 in conference play. WC was ranked No. 7 in the latest NJCAA Division I national poll released on March 11.

Weatherford hosted Vernon on Wednesday at Roger Williams Ballpark and won 11-3 and 15-5.

In game one, WC scored eight runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Louka Daoust turned in four RBI on a 2-for-4 performance with two doubles. Trace Mazon was 2-for-3 with a home run and a double. Robert Fortenberry earned the win, allowing three hits and four walks over five innings with three strikeouts.

WC put up another eight-run inning in game two, this time in the bottom of the sixth, which gave the Coyotes a run-rule win. Dayton Tockey had six RBI including a home run. Logan Simmons got the win, scattering six hits over three and two-thirds, with one earned run, two walks and four strikeouts.

On Sunday in Vernon, WC won 7-4 and 4-0.

In game one, WC withstood a late Chaparral rally as Vernon scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth. Daoust and Uriah Walters each went 2-for-3 for WC. Evan Brandt struck out five while allowing five hits and three earned runs over five innings.

In Sunday's second game, WC shut down Vernon behind starter Cade Crossland with five hits, one walk and seven strikeouts, and Jack Cagianello's one-hit, two-strikeout performance in three innings of relief. Kason Wells was 2-for-4 at the plate.

WC now heads into a four-game series with North Central Texas College, with a noon doubleheader on Wednesday at Williams Ballpark and two more games in Gainesville on Saturday.
