After shattering the women's NJCAA indoor 5000-meter national record at the Charlie Thomas Thomas Invitational, South Plains freshman Gladys Jemaiyo was named the USTFCCCA NJCAA Women's ITF National Athlete of the Week on Tuesday.

Jemaiyo ran an NJCAA-leading time of 16:51.52 which broke the previous record held by Iowa Central's Leanne Pompeani who clocked a time of 16:55.62 in 2016. Jemaiyo becomes the third women's athlete from South Plains College to win the award and the ninth overall to win the award during the indoor season.

South Plains will be back on the road this weekend in Fayetteville for the Tyson Invitational at the Randal Tyson Track Center on the campus of the University of Arkansas Feb. 8-9.
