NMJC wins Women's Indoor Track National Championship
The New Mexico Junior College Lady Thunderbirds won the NJCAA National Indoor Track Championship recently.
South Plains College finished in third place, and Western Texas College finished 10th.
Going into the 4 x 400 Meter Relay, the NMJC Thunderbirds had a 2-point led on Iowa Central. All the T-Birds had to do was beat Iowa Central in the relay to win its second national title and first outright title (The T-Birds tied Iowa Central for the title in 2010). The relay team of Britney Hew, Christine Moss, Shian Hyde, and D'Jai Baker ran a season best time of 3:45.65 to beat out Iowa Central's time of 3:47.50 giving the T-Birds the title.
"It was a tough battle" said Head Coach Keith Blackwill. "It took a total team effort to win, but Latavia Coombs and Esther Gitahi really stood out."
Latavia was the national champion in the triple jump, second in the pentathlon and 60M Hurdles, third in the long jump and sixth in the high jump. Esther was national champion in the mile and 3000M, second in the 1000M and part of the national champion distance medley relay and the sixth place 4 x 800M relay. Joining Esther on the national champion distance medley relay team was Britney Hew, Teresha Jacobs and Taylyr Jordan.
